====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 29, 2004 Minnesota--Call Your Senator Today! Dear HSLDA members and friends: Governor Tim Pawlenty nominated Virginia's Deputy Secretary of Education, Cheri Pierson Yecke, to be Minnesota's Commissioner of Education. HSLDA has had a long history of positive interactions with Mrs. Yecke, and the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MACHE) has had nothing but positive reports of Mrs. Yecke since she has come to Minnesota. That is why last Tuesday's vote by the Senate Education Committee surprised us. On a party line vote of 6 to 4, that committee rejected Mrs. Yecke's nomination to be Minnesota's new Commissioner of Education. Action Requested: 1. The full Senate will vote on Commissioner Yecke's confirmation at any time. Please contact your Senator immediately http://www.hslda.org/toolbox Make sure you identify yourself as a constituent and then say, "Please vote FOR Cheri Pierson Yecke as Minnesota's new Commissioner of Education." 2. Seven Senators have been identified as particularly important. Please also call each of these Senators to ask them to vote for Mrs. Yecke. If you know other families who live in these areas, please pass this message on to them as soon as possible. Senator Tom Saxhaug District 3 - Grand Rapids 651-296-4136 Senator Tom Bakk District 6 - Cook 651-296-8881 Senator Becky Lourey District 8 - Kerrick 651-296-0293 Senator Jim Vickerman District 22 - Tracy 651-296-5650 Senator James Metzen District 39 - South St. Paul 651-296-4370 Senator Linda Scheid District 46 - Brooklyn Park 651-296-8869 Senator Chuck Wiger District 55 - North St. Paul 651-296-6820 Background: Commissioner Yecke met with support group leaders on October 25, 2003. She is a strong supporter of school choice for parents, including nonpublic educational alternatives such as homeschooling. Mrs. Yecke has appointed Morgan Brown as Director of the Office of Choice and Innovation in the Minnesota Department of Education. Mr. Brown has been quite a champion for homeschoolers, and is working closely with MACHE to resolve longstanding problems that have plagued homeschoolers in certain districts. Your support for Commissioner Yecke, at this critical time, may make the difference between having a Commissioner of Education who supports homeschool freedom, and one who does not. Please call your Senator today and pass this information on to other friends of educational liberty. Sincerely, Scott W.
