====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 16, 2004 Wyoming--Eternal Vigilance Required Dear HSLDA members and friends: Thank you so much for your heroic efforts to keep the Wyoming Legislature from passing a bad version of HB 88. I have received a number of comments from legislators and legislative staff about the phenomenal response of homeschooling families. Your zeal and diligence made a difference for families in Wyoming. Now I need families to rise in defense of liberty one more time. On Friday, April 23, 2004, at 9:00 a.m., the "Child Representation Subcommittee" of the Joint Judiciary Interim Committee will hold an all-day meeting in the Hathaway Building in Cheyenne to "consider issues relating to the legal representation of children, including receiving testimony from interested parties." This meeting should start to outline a year-long effort to draft new laws governing children and families. The Child Representation Subcommittee consists of Representatives Simpson, Buchanan, Landon, and Olsen, and Senators Goodenough and Hanes. The agenda starts with a background briefing by Donna Sheen of the Department of Family Services, followed by a discussion by a representative of the Colorado Office of Child Representation. Shari Shink, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center and 2001 American Bar Association "Child Advocate of the Year" (for information click here: http://www.rockymountainchildrenslawcenter.org ), will then speak, and then the subcommittee will spell out the issues to be considered as the subcommittee does its work throughout the coming year. After a lunch break, at 1:00 p.m., the public has the opportunity to comment on the proceedings. The rest of the afternoon will be spent discussing children's issues and potential legislation. I need each homeschool family in the Cheyenne area to consider whether they can give up a Friday to attend this meeting (for directions, see the bottom of this message). You don't have to say anything to make a difference-your mere presence makes a statement. Well-behaved teens would be especially helpful. (Please do not bring younger children with short attention spans: they tend to distract and annoy legislators.) If enough families attend this meeting and make their presence felt, Wyoming should be a good state for families. But if citizens like you don't get involved, out-of-state "child advocates" will determine the future of Wyoming families. Sincerely, Scott Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney To Get to the Hathaway Building Auditorium: From I-25 take exit 11 and turn east onto Randall Ave. This takes you to Carey Ave, turn south (right) onto Carey Ave and then go to 24th St. At 24th Street turn east (left) and go a short distance to Capitol Ave. Turn south onto Capitol Avenue.
