Dear Maryland HSLDA Members and Friends, Your calls and testimony were effective! SB 345 was killed in committee today. It would have treated truancy like child abuse and subjected home school families to social services investigations for minor alleged infractions of the home school regulations. During last week's hearing, the principal sponsor said she had received hundreds of phone calls from homeschoolers. She claimed, incorrectly, that the bill would not affect homeschoolers. Many representatives of so-called "child advocate" organizations testified about how the bill would help in early detection and prevention of child abuse. Many homeschoolers testified against the bill, including Scott Woodruff for HSLDA and Karen Apple on behalf of Christian Home Educators Network. One of the sponsors of the bill was the chairman of the committee. Since committee chairmen have tremendous influence, this could have been a significant problem regarding the bill. However, one member of the committee announced during the hearing that she herself was a homeschool mom, giving our cause an unexpected boost. This tremendous victory protects homeschoolers from becoming targets of inappropriate social services investigations, and allows social workers to focus their efforts where they are truly needed.
