Dear HSLDA members and friends: On February 20, HSLDA urged Kentucky homeschoolers to contact Representative Rick Nelson (D-87) to urge him to withdraw House Bill 474, which would raise the compulsory attendance age in Kentucky to 18. Within days, reports began to come back to HSLDA that this bill was unlikely to move. Soon, HSLDA member families indicated that they had reached Representative Nelson, who was willing to withdraw his support from HB 474 after learning of its detrimental affect towards homeschooled families. On March 4, we contacted Representative Nelson ourselves, and he has confirmed that he has withdrawn HB 474. We want to thank every Kentucky homeschooler who contacted Representative Nelson. Your vigilance helps maintain liberty for us all. We also want to express our appreciation to Representative Nelson, who was willing to withdraw his own bill after learning of its unintended consequences on hardworking homeschoolers. Active citizens like you and responsive legislators like Representative Nelson make participatory democracy work.
