====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 10, 2004 Vermont--Homeschoolers versus Drivers Education Teachers Dear HSLDA members and friends: House Bill 560 will be heard in the House Transportation Committee soon. Homeschoolers have done a wonderful job of persuading legislators to let parents teach their own children how to drive. Nobody cares more about a child's safety than his own father or mother! Unfortunately, the union of driver education teachers opposes this bill. We need your help to pass the bill in the Transportation Committee. Action Requested: 1. Please contact every member of the House Transportation Committee and urge them to vote "yes" on H.B. 560. Say, "No one cares more about a child's safety than his own mother and father. Say yes to parent taught driver education!" House Transportation Committee: CHITTENDEN-3-7 (1) - South Burlington Rep. John Winters (R) 1 Winters Court , Swanton, VT 05488 868-7117 jwinters@leg.state.vt.us rivside@together.net Background: Parent taught driver education has been successful in a number of states, and this bill is an important opportunity for us to find out how "friendly" the Vermont legislature is to homeschoolers. Even if your child is only six or seven, this bill provides a perfect opportunity for us to "test the waters" for future legislative initiatives. If homeschoolers can't overcome the opposition of a small teacher's union, like the union of driver education teachers, it will be almost impossible to achieve a genuine change to the homeschool law past the opposition of the Vermont Education Association. Your effort in support of H.B. 560 is important. Please call or write the legislators listed above, and pass this message on to other supporters of home education. We need the House Transportation Committee to understand that parents care more about their own children's safety than a teacher's union. The group that is opposing this bill, the driving teacher's union, clearly does not understand our concerns for our children. During testimony in the House Education Committee, one of the driving teachers said that they were concerned whether or not homeschooling parents could effectively deliver alcohol and drug abuse education to their children, especially education about "driving under the influence." This teacher said, "I do not think that kids would want to talk with their parents about such a subject." Obviously, this drivers education teacher is unfamiliar with the average homeschool family. We need your calls to help the legislators hear from parents who are committed to talking with their children about every subject, from drinking to driving. Homeschoolers care more about the safety of their own children than any paid instructor! Sincerely, Scott W.
