====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 4, 2004 Idaho--Homeschoolers Defeat Several Bills Dear HSLDA members and friends: Idaho homeschoolers have won several victories in the Idaho legislature! HB 740 would have lowered the compulsory age to six AND mandated kindergarten, which traditionally includes 5 year olds. The Idaho Coalition of Home Educators alerted their members and we asked HSLDA members to call their legislators regarding HB 740. The bill was debated for two hours on the floor of the house yesterday and was killed by an overwhelming vote against it. Several representatives made their decision to oppose the bill as a result of the phone calls and emails they received from their constituents. Another bill, HB 750, would have raised the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 17. ICHE contacted the bill's sponsors informing them of concerns about the bill. ICHE appeared at the committee meeting this past Monday and testified against the bill demonstrating statistically that the states that require compulsory school attendance through ages 17 or 18 actually have a higher dropout rate than do states such a Idaho that only require attendance through age 16. At the end of the debate, the House Education Committee voted nearly unanimously against the bill. We are grateful that ICHE was able to work with their contacts to kill the bill.
