Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your calls made the difference! House Bill 2163, the bill mandating state testing of homeschool students, was withdrawn by Representative Turner on Monday, March 1. This action effectively kills the bill for the remainder of this session. We have also learned that Senator Roscoe Dixon, sponsor of Senate Bill 2157, has agreed to withdraw his bill later today. House Bill 2163, sponsored by Representative Mike Turner, would have required all non-public high school students to take the Gateway end- of-course tests in order to graduate from high school. This bill would not only have mandated testing of all homeschool and church- related high school students but would also have effectively required them to conform their curriculum to match that of the public schools. Thank you for being vigilant to protect our freedom to homeschool. Your willingness to get involved, together with the hard work of the Tennessee Home Educator's Association, has stopped the most dangerous threat to Tennessee homeschooling freedom in recent years.
