Virginia--Homeschool Freedom Bill Passes Senate
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
Thank you for your calls!
On March 1 the Senate voted 25-15 to pass HB 675, the Homeschool Freedom bill. It now goes to the desk of Governor Warner. We will send out an update on how to contact the governor when we find out the timing of when the bill will arrive on his desk.
The debate lasted 40 minutes and fifteen senators spoke. The opponents of the bill demonstrated their extreme prejudice.
Here is an excerpt from Joe Guarino, working with the Home Education Association of Virginia (HEAV) and HSLDA, as he observed the lengthy debate in the Senate yesterday:
"Senator Janet Howell (D-Reston) said, "If you are a proponent of children, then you must be repulsed by this bill." She voiced utter fear as she continued, "Parents will have total control of the education of their child." Senator Patsy Ticer (D-Alexandria) thought this bill "defies common sense" because it "dumbs down" our children. She thought only professionals should teach children and that parents do not qualify. Mims referred to several opponents' comments as "somewhat elitist." Senator Richard Saslaw (D-Springfield) commented: "I wouldn't want a parent with a high school diploma teaching my kid!" He also stated that it was "absurd" for anyone to think that a homeschool education was as good as a public education."
This typified the attacks we heard at the Senate committee meeting two weeks ago. The opponents of homeschooling are still alive and well and if ever given the chance, they will try to take away our freedom.
Thank you for being vigilant and willing to make sacrifices to protect and expand our freedom to homeschool. Your calls and membership with HSLDA helps make these advances possible and keep homeschooling free in Virginia.
Sincerely,
Chris Klicka Senior Counsel Home School Legal Defense Association
