====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 2, 2004 Iowa--Calls Needed-Parent Directed Driver Ed Heads For Crucial Vote Dear HSLDA members and friends: A bill that would allow homeschool parents to teach driver's education to their own children, (HF 2394), was approved by the House Education Committee last week and now heads for a vote on the House floor. Parent taught driver's education saves lives. Although driver education is theoretically available through school districts, many homeschool students are turned away because the classes are full, and even if they are admitted, the cost can be prohibitively expensive. Homeschooling for driver education works. We need your help now to get this message to the House of Representatives. Action Requested: Call your representative this week and ask him or her to support HF 2394 when it comes up for a vote. Remember that your representative may not know anything about this bill. Your message may be simple as: "Please support HF 2394. It would allow homeschool parents to teach driver's education to their own children using an approved program. A study shows that parent taught driver education saves lives. Homeschoolers are frequently turned away from public school driver education because the classes are full. Homeschool families need the option of teaching their own children using an approved program. The Education Committee approved the bill by a vote of 13 to 6." To find the name and telephone number of your representative, go to our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox Reasons to Support HF 2394: 1. According to a study by the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, teenage injuries and deaths were dramatically lower for teens who learned to drive using a homeschool driver education program. The total number of accidents and tickets was also dramatically lower. 2. Homeschooled students are frequently turned away from public school driver education classes because the classes are full. 3. Public school driver education courses are expensive, and getting more expensive. 4. No professional driver teacher cares as much about your child as you do. Parent taught driver education is highly successful for the same reason that parent taught academics are highly successful: highly individualized attention, flexible scheduling, parent child interaction, and greater opportunity for accountability. The Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators and HSLDA fully support this bill. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
