Tennessee--Subcommittee Hearing on Homeschool Testing Bill Cancelled

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Your calls are working! House Bill 2163, the bill mandating state
testing of homeschool students, has been removed from the calendar
for the K-12 Subcommittee meeting on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. However,
the bill has not yet been completely withdrawn, so it could still
come up for consideration in the Subcommittee at a later date.
Therefore, we ask that you continue calling the sponsor and members
of the K-12 Subcommittee to ensure that this bill is withdrawn.

House Bill 2163, sponsored by Representative Mike Turner, would
require all non-public high school students to take the Gateway end-
of-course tests in order to graduate from high school. This bill
would not only mandate testing of all homeschool and church-related
high school students but would also effectively require them to
conform their curriculum to match that of the public schools.

The withdrawal of House Bill 2163 from the K-12 Subcommittee calendar
makes it unnecessary for you to attend the Subcommittee hearing
Tuesday morning.

Also, it appears likely that Representative Turner will withdraw this
bill soon, but it is important to continue to exert pressure on his
office by continuing to make phone calls and send e-mails until he
makes that decision.

REQUESTED ACTION

1. Please contact Representative Turner, the sponsor of this bill,
with this message:

"Please withdraw H.B. 2163. This bill will require unnecessary
testing of homeschool and private school students and violate the
rights of parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for
their own children. The cost to the State of Tennessee for testing
thousands of additional students would have a significant fiscal
impact."

2. Please contact each member of the K-12 Subcommittee with this
message:

"Please oppose House Bill 2163 which would require unnecessary
testing and violate the rights of parents to choose the curriculum
they consider best for their own children. The cost to the State of
Tennessee for testing thousands of additional students would have a
significant fiscal impact."
