====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 26, 2004 Tennessee--Hearing on Homeschool Testing Bill--Calls Needed Immediately! Dear HSLDA members and friends: We need your help now! The most dangerous piece of legislation faced by Tennessee homeschoolers in recent years is beginning to move. The bill mandating state testing of homeschool students is now scheduled to be heard at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, by the K-12 Subcommittee of the House Education Committee. Please take a moment and make a few calls to stop this dangerous legislation. House Bill 2163, sponsored by Representative Mike Turner, would require all non-public high school students to take the Gateway end- of-course tests in order to graduate from high school. This bill would not only mandate testing of all homeschool and church-related high school students but would also effectively require them to conform their curriculum to match that of the public schools. Despite assurances from Representative Turner that he would discontinue efforts to pass this legislation, it is now going to be considered this coming Tuesday by the K-12 Subcommittee of the House Education Committee. It is crucial that you contact Representative Turner and the members of the Subcommittee to express your opposition to this legislation. Telephone calls are more effective than e-mails. Doing both would be best. REQUESTED ACTION 1. Please contact Representative Turner, the sponsor of this bill, with this message: "Please withdraw House Bill 2163. This bill will require unnecessary testing of homeschool and private school students and violate the rights of parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for their own children. The cost to the State of Tennessee for testing thousands of additional students would have a significant fiscal impact." Representative Mike Turner, 615-741-3229 rep.mike.turner@legislature.state.tn.us 2. Please contact each member of the K-12 Subcommittee with this message: "Please vote against House Bill 2163 which would require unnecessary testing and violate the rights of parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for their own children. The cost to the State of Tennessee for testing thousands of additional students would have a significant fiscal impact." Members of the K-12 Subcommittee: Representative Joe Towns, Jr. - Chairman, 615-741-2189 rep.joe.towns@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Richard Montgomery - Vice Chairman, 615-741-5981 rep.richard.montgomery@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Diane Black, 615-741-1999 rep.diane.black@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Harry Brooks, 615-741-6879 rep.harry.brooks@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Tommie Brown, 615-741-4374 rep.tommie.brown@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Steve Godsey, 615-741-7623 rep.steve.godsey@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Ulysses Jones, Jr., 615-741-4575 rep.ulysses.jones@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Mark Maddox, 615-741-7847 rep.mark.maddox@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Larry Turner, 615-741-6954 rep.larry.turner@legislature.state.tn.us Representative Les Winningham, 615-741-6852 rep.les.winningham@legislature.state.tn.us 3.
