====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 26, 2004 Virginia--Urgent: Calls Needed to Pass Homeschool Bill in the Senate Dear HSLDA members and friends: Good news: the Senate Education Committee, who postponed reconsideration of HB 675 from last week has voted 8-7 this morning to pass the bill. If you remember, one of our key supporters, Sen. Houck, was sick, leaving the bill with a 7-7 tie last week. At the vote this morning Sen. Houck voted in our favor. This Monday the full Senate will vote on H.B. 675 so your calls to your own senator are needed immediately. We drafted H.B. 675 to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in Virginia. If passed, this bill will allow families to homeschool with just a high school diploma. No longer will it be necessary to seek discretionary approval from the local superintendent or comply with state SOLs! This bill will bring Virginia up to speed with 48 other states that allow homeschoolers to only have a high school diploma or less to teach their children. It will also end the harassment some families without college degrees have faced from school districts. Action: Call your senator and urge him or her to support H.B. 675. Calls are not necessary to the eight senators on the committee who voted with us: Sen. Potts, Sen. Houck, Sen. Martin, Sen. Newman, Sen. Quayle, Sen. Bolling, Sen. Ruff, and Sen. Mims. Please give your senator this message in your own words: "Please vote in support of H.B. 675 and thereby protect every parent's right to homeschool in Virginia. This will bring Virginia up to speed with the other states that focus on results, not qualifications. The studies ALL show that homeschooling works, with students scoring above average regardless of the parents' qualifications." If you do not know who your state representative is, use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox Thank you for all your calls to help us get this far!
