====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 18, 2004 Idaho--Calls Still Needed to Defeat Bill that Targets Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA members and friends: Despite an overwhelming number of contacts from concerned parents, S.B. 1233, the bill that targets homeschoolers, passed out of the Senate Education Committee and will be going to the Senate floor for debate today or tomorrow. The problem with this bill is that it tries to act as a safety net to catch any families who may be in violation of the education law. In the process it threatens to impose heavy penalties on families whose homeschool is non-compliant in only minor or technical ways. The next step for this bill will be a debate and vote before the full Senate. We expect this vote Wednesday or Thursday, so we need you to continue to call your senator to express your opposition to S.B. 1233. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Calls are needed to the Senate. This bill will make any home educating parent who fails "to place the child in school . . . or to have the child comparably instructed . . ." automatically guilty of a misdemeanor crime. We believe that this bill targets homeschooling families. The use of all other forms of education - public schools, private schools, and parochial schools - are expressly exempt from the statute. Only homeschoolers can be convicted of failing to provide comparable instruction under the statute this bill modifies. We are working with the Idaho Coalition of Home Educators to defeat S.B. 1233.
