====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 17, 2004 Oklahoma--Update SB 895 - Homeschoolers Help Defeat Math Test as Driver Qualification Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your phone calls turned the tide! The Senate Education committee voted Monday morning to kill SB 895, which would have required all students--including homeschoolers--to pass a state-approved math test to obtain a driver's license before age 18. The vote was 7 in favor of the bill to 8 opposed, so this was a close one. Your calls transformed a likely defeat into a win. During the hearing, several committee members expressed surprise at the number of calls and e-mails opposing the bill. It is indisputable that the concerns of homeschoolers influenced the final outcome. The votes were as follows: Williams yes Laster yes Wilcoxson yes Cain yes Coffee yes Robinson yes Kerr yes Lawler no Milacek no Rabon no Riley no Johnson no Rozell no Ford no Harrison no In the spirit of SB 895, another pending bill, HB 2147, would require passing a state-approved geography and history test to obtain a driver's license. Perhaps the defeat of SB 895 will help persuade lawmakers in the House that HB 2147 does not even deserve a hearing! A driver's license is too important to be trivialized as a carrot to motivate students to learn. Gimmicks like these help no one in the long run.
