====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 13, 2004 Alaska--Calls Needed Now! - Bill to Create Identification Tracking Number for Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA members and friends: If we act now, we may be able to stop a bill that would create a tracking system for homeschoolers in Alaska, monitoring their school enrollment and evaluating their educational progress every year. Please take time to make a few telephone calls to stop this dangerous legislation. House Bill 437, introduced on February 5, 2004, by Representative Mike Chenault, would create a tracking system for all children in the state who are of school age. This would include students enrolled in private schools or alternative education programs, which is defined as "an educational program that is provided in the child's home..." Each child would be assigned a 10-digit identification number, and information about the child's educational progress would be reported to the Legislature every year. This tracking system would be administered by the Department of Education and Early Development in conjunction with the Department of Health and Social Services. This bill is scheduled to be heard by the House Special Committee on Education this coming Tuesday morning, February 17, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Capitol. This bill must be defeated before it gains any momentum. It is crucial that you contact Representative Chenault, members of the House Special Committee on Education, and your own state representative to express your opposition to this legislation. REQUESTED ACTION: 1. Before the hearing on Tuesday please contact Representative Chenault, the sponsor of this bill, with the following message: "Please withdraw House Bill 437 which will create a tracking and evaluation system for private and homeschool children in Alaska. This bill would create an unnecessary academic evaluation of all nonpublic school children at state expense. The idea of government tracking all school children, even those being privately educated, is an invasion of privacy and infringement on the freedom of Alaska citizens." 2. Please contact each member of the House Special Committee on Education and your own state representative with this message: "Please vote against House Bill 437 which will create a tracking and evaluation system for private and homeschool children in Alaska. This bill would create an unnecessary academic evaluation of all nonpublic school children at state expense. The idea of government tracking all school children, even those being privately educated, is an invasion of privacy and infringement on the freedom of Alaska citizens." 3. Please forward this Elert to every homeschooling family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact these legislators with the suggested messages.
