Virginia--Homeschool Bill Passes Subcommittee -- One More Hearing to
Go!
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
Good news! This morning, by a vote of 3 to 1, HB 675 passed the
Senate Education Subcommittee, chaired by homeschool supporter,
Senator Steve Newman. This means the bill will be recommended for
passage before the full Education Committee this coming Thursday.
We drafted HB 675 to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in
Virginia. If passed, this bill will allow families to homeschool with
just a high school diploma. No longer will it be necessary to seek
discretionary approval from the local superintendent or comply with
state SOLs! This bill will bring Virginia up to speed with 48 other
states that allow homeschoolers to only have a high school diploma or
less to teach their children. It will also end the harassment some
families without college degrees have faced from school districts.
The last and most crucial hearing will be before the full Senate
Education Committee on the morning of February 19. HSLDA will be
testifying. Please mark your calendars and consider attending to show
your support.
