Oklahoma--Calls needed--Bill to Make Driver's License Hostage to
State Math Test

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Calls are needed immediately to stop a bill that would prohibit 16
and 17 year olds from getting a driver's license unless they first
pass a state-approved math test. It is Senate Bill 895 and the
sponsor is Kathleen Wilcoxson (R-45). The Senate Education Committee
has scheduled a hearing on the bill for Monday morning.

A student would be required to pass either the state-wide 8th grade
math test, or another test approved by the State Department of
Education. Homeschooled students would be at a tremendous
disadvantage since they don't use the state's math curriculum and
would have no control over what sort of alternative test the
Department of Education might approve.

Action requested:

Please call all the members of the Senate Education Committee (see
below) and ask them to oppose this misguided bill. Your message can
be as simple as, "Please kill SB 895. It would create an unnecessary
barrier for well qualified teens to get driver's licenses. A teen
who has proved he can drive safely should not be denied a license
because of a math test."

Chair: Senator Penny Williams, 405-521-5551 (Capitol Office)
Vice Chair: Senator Charles Ford, 405-521-5675 (Capitol Office)
Senator Bernest Cain, 405-521-5610 (Capitol Office)
Senator Glenn Coffee, 405-521-55636 (Capitol Office)
Senator J. Berry Harrison, 405-521-5581 (Capitol Office)
Senator Mike Johnson, 405-521-5592 (Capitol Office)
Senator Robert Kerr, 405-521-5612 (Capitol Office)
Senator Charlie Laster, 405-521-5539 (Capitol Office)
Senator Daisy Lawler, 405-521-5569 (Capitol Office)
Senator Robert Milacek, 405-521-5630 (Capitol Office)
Senator Mike Morgan, 405-521-5572 (Capitol Office)
Senator Scott Pruitt, 405-521-5602 (Capitol Office)
Senator Jeff Rabon, 405-521-5614 (Capitol Office)
Senator Nancy Riley, 405-521-5600 (Capitol Office)
Senator Ben Robinson, 405-521-5533 (Capitol Office)
Senator Herb Rozell, 405-521-5574 (Capitol Office)
Senator Mark Snyder, 405-521-5622 (Capitol Office)
Senator Stratton Taylor, 405-521-5555 (Capitol Office)
Senator Kathleen Wilcoxson, 405-521-5618 (Capitol Office)

Remember, this bill would affect all Oklahoma parents.

Reasons to Oppose SB 895

1. Teens who have proved they can drive safely should not be denied
a license just because they cannot pass a math test. Math ability
has nothing to do with driving ability.

2. If homeschoolers were to take the state-wide criterion referenced
test, they would be at a major disadvantage because it is based on
the state curriculum, which homeschoolers do not use.

3. Homeschoolers would have no control over what alternative tests
the Department of Education might approve. This would put them at a
significant disadvantage.

4. A driver's license is an important gateway to meet basic
transportation needs for those who have demonstrated they can drive
safely. It must not be trivialized into a reward for good behavior
for students who have jumped though enough hoops.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
