====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 10, 2004 Senate Hearing Rescheduled but Calls Still Needed for Homeschool Bill Dear Virginia HSLDA members and friends: The Senate Education Committee hearing for H.B. 675 has been rescheduled for February 19, 2004. HSLDA will be testifying at the hearing. We still need your calls to the committee members. Below are the uncommitted senators and they need to hear from you concerning HB 675, the homeschool freedom bill. Your calls are working. Sen. Houck, one of the senators targeted yesterday, has already promised to support the homeschool bill. The committee has fifteen members and at the current time eight senators are promising support. ACTION: There are two important action items: 1) Call your senator if listed below and urge him or her to support HB 675. Call ONLY if you live in their district. (If you know someone who lives in their district, call that person and ask them to call the senator.) Please give your senator this message in your own words: "Please vote in support of HB 675 and thereby protect every parent's right to homeschool in Virginia. This will bring Virginia up to speed with the other states that focus on results, not qualifications. The studies ALL show that homeschooling works, with students scoring above average regardless of the parents' qualifications." Here are the uncommitted Education Committee senators that need to be urged to support HB 675: Sen. Blevins 804-698-7514 Sen. Edwards 804-698-7521 Sen. Lucas 804-698-7518 Sen. Lambert 804-698-7509 2) Please make every effort to attend the Education Committee hearing on HB 675. Without a strong showing of support from the homeschool community, this bill may not pass. The Virginia Education Association has already targeted this bill for defeat. This will be a great field trip for your children! The bill is scheduled to be heard at approximately 10:00 AM on February 19. We will send an update when the hearing room is determined. BACKGROUND: We drafted HB 675 to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in Virginia. If passed, this bill will allow families to homeschool with just a high school diploma. No longer will it be necessary to seek discretionary approval from the local superintendent or comply with state SOLs! This bill will bring Virginia up to speed with 48 other states that allow homeschoolers to only have a high school diploma or less to teach their children. It will also end the harassment some families without college degrees have faced from school districts. HSLDA and the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) asked Del. Rob Bell of Charlottesville to introduce HB 675.
