Update on Marriage Amendment - Action Needed

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
February 10, 2004

An update from Michael Farris:

I want to thank the thousands of you who have already responded to
our earlier elert about the issue of same-sex marriage.

Here is an update on the federal marriage amendment.

1. You are likely to hear an announcement from the President very
soon on his support for a federal marriage amendment.

2. The Republicans in the Senate are very, very reluctant to take on
this issue. Most of them are afraid that if they speak out against
homosexuality they are going to be castigated in the press for being
"hateful". I understand that because I have already received a few
such negative responses from my email to HSLDA members last week.

The bottom line is this: Our congressional leaders will not support
the strong position unless there is a massive outcry from the public.

You all play a key role in shaping the future of this policy. If we
are ever going to save marriage--the next few days are absolutely

Please call the White House. (202.456.1111). Please call both of your
U.S. Senators. (202.224.3121) Please call your congressman. Tell
them "the Musgrave Amendment is not strong enough. We must stop
civil unions also."

You are one of the few groups in America who is hearing this message.
Most other voices have decided to not demand an end to civil unions
in a constitutional amendment. If we do not speak out on this in the
next day or two, our position will never see the light of day--civil
unions and gay marriage will become the law of the land.

Please call now.

HSLDA has litigated the issues surrounding homeschooling for over 20
years. It is our belief that the fundamental right to direct the
upbringing of children, including their education, is largely
predicated on the institution of the traditional family and its
status in society - a status which predates even the founding of the
United States. Should the nature of the traditional family be
changed, indeed radically re-defined by the modern state, the
constitutional-historical basis of what the family is and its
privileges are weakened. We cannot let this happen.
