====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ======================================================================
January 30, 2004
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
We need you to continue to call the members of the Assembly regarding HB 675! The full House of Delegates is voting this Monday afternoon, February 2nd--and the vote will likely be close.
We drafted a bill (HB 675) to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in Virginia. If passed, this bill will allow families to homeschool with just a high school diploma. The bill will give homeschool parents without a college degree full freedom to choose their own curriculum,
Your calls and e-mails will make the difference!
Homeschool lobbyist Joe Guarino, who has visited over 50 delegates today, found that many of them are favorably impressed with the amount of e-mails and calls they have received in support of this bill. Keep up the good work!
ACTION REQUESTED:
1. If you have not called yet, please call your delegate and urge him or her to support HB 675. Please give your delegate this message:
"Please vote in support of HB 675 and thereby protect every parent's right to homeschool in Virginia. This will bring Virginia up to speed with the other states that focus on results, not qualifications. The studies ALL show that homeschooling works, with students scoring above average regardless of the parents' qualifications."
2. Use our legislative toolbox to find the phone number for your Delegate. It is not necessary to call Delegate Bell, the sponsor of the bill. (http://www.hslda.org/toolbox.)
3. Pass this message on to others.
BACKGROUND:
This bill will bring Virginia up to speed with 48 other states that allow homeschoolers who only have a high school diploma or less to teach their children. It will also end the harassment some families without college degrees have faced from school districts.
HSLDA and the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) asked Del. Rob Bell of Charlottesville to introduce HB 675. Please pray for this important bill to pass.
For more information and documentation that demonstrates that there is no positive correlation between teacher qualifications and student performance, see http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1299
Sincerely,
Chris Klicka Senior Counsel Home School Legal Defense Association
