====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ======================================================================
January 27, 2004
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
We need your calls today! Below are the uncommitted delegates and they need to hear from you concerning HB 675, the homeschool freedom bill.
The hearing scheduled yesterday has been postponed to 8:30 AM tomorrow (January 28).
We drafted a bill (HB 675) to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in Virginia. If passed, this bill will allow families to homeschool with just a high school diploma! This bill will bring Virginia up to speed with 48 other states that allow homeschoolers to only have a high school diploma or less to teach their children. It will also end the harassment some families without college degrees have faced from school districts.
HSLDA and the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) had HB 675 introduced by Del. Rob Bell of Charlottesville. Homeschool lobbyist Joe Guarino, representing both organizations, has been tirelessly visiting the members of the education committee and has secured 8 supporters. The key will be to win over the support of the members listed below.
ACTION:
There are two important action items:
1) Call your delegate if listed below and urge him or her to support HB 675. Call ONLY if you live in their district. (If you know someone who lives in their district, call that person and ask them to call the delegate.)
Please give your delegate this message:
"Please vote in support of HB 675 and thereby protect every parent's right to homeschool in Virginia. This will bring Virginia up to speed with the other states that focus on results, not qualifications. The studies ALL show that homeschooling works, with students scoring above average regardless of the parents' qualifications."
Here are the uncommitted Education Committee delegates that need to be urged to support HB 675:
Del. Bill Carrico, Independence 804-698-1005
Del. Paul Councill, Franklin 804-698-1075
Del. Jeff Frederick, Woodbridge 804-698-1052
Del. Phil Hamilton, Newport News 804-698-1093
Del. Bennie Keister, Dublin 804-698-1006
Del. Melanie Rapp, Yorktown 804-698-1096
Del. Gary Reese, Oak Hill 804-698-1067
Del. Tom Rust, Herndon 804-698-1086
2) Please make every effort to attend the first hearing on HB 675. Without a strong showing of support from the homeschool community, this bill may not pass. The Virginia Education Association has already targeted this bill for defeat.
The bill, HB 675, has been rescheduled to be heard for the first time before the full House Education Committee on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 8:30 a.m. in the House Appropriations Room on the 9th floor of the General Assembly Building. This will be a great field trip for your children!
Please pray for this important bill to pass.
