====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 23, 2004 Dear HSLDA members and friends, Thank you for your calls to Representative Turner's office, you are making an impact! Please continue your calls to Representative Turner since he has not withdrawn his bill. Also expand your calls to include Senator Roscoe Dixon, who just introduced Senate Bill 2157, the companion to Representative Turner's bill. Senate Bill 2157 includes the same harmful language that would require all non-public high school students to take the government (Gateway) "end-of-course" tests in order to graduate from high school. This bill would not only mandate testing of all homeschool and church- related high school students but would also effectively require homeschools and private schools to conform their curriculum to match that of the public schools. This bill (and Representative Turner's companion bill) must be defeated before it gains any momentum. Contact Senator Dixon and your own state senator to express your opposition to this legislation. REQUESTED ACTION 1. Immediately contact Senator Dixon, the sponsor of this bill, and explain, "Please withdraw S.B. 2157. This bill will require unnecessary testing of homeschool and private school students and violate the rights of parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for their own children. It will also violate the No Child Left Behind Act jeopardizing federal education funds." 2. Please contact your state senator with this message: "Please vote against Senate Bill 2157 which would require unnecessary testing and violate the rights of parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for their own children." A letter is a very effective means of influencing legislators. If you choose not to write, please call and email the senator. He needs to hear from every homeschooling family in Tennessee. Senator Roscoe Dixon - 615-741-4158-Capitol office District office--901-946-2040 9A Legislative Plaza Nashville, TN 37243 3. Please forward this E-lert to every homeschooling family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact the sponsor and their own state senator.
