====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 22, 2004 Dear Nebraska HSLDA members and friends: Thanks to your outpouring of telephone calls, the danger from Legislative Bill 868 has been averted. This bill, which would have raised the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18, was heard in committee January 20. The bill's sponsor, Senator Redfield, proposed an amendment to make sure that homeschoolers were in no way harmed by this legislation. Dave Lostroh, president of the Nebraska Christian Home Educator's Association, met with Senator Redfield before the hearing. Both NCHEA and HSLDA will take a neutral stance on the bill if it is amended. Senator Redfield had intended this bill to give parents more control over their own minor children. She explained that she had been contacted by a constituent whose daughter dropped out at the age of 16, even though her parents wanted her to continue her education. This bill would have given that parent some additional leverage because the child would be required to attend school until she turned 18, unless her parents gave her permission to drop out. Senator Redfield never intended the bill to undermine parental rights. A number of homeschooled students attended the hearing and made a favorable impression on the legislators there. The general response of the homeschool community made a big impact on the lawmakers. One senator said to the sponsor of the bill, "You sure know how to stir up the hornet's nest!" HSLDA is proud to serve "hornets" like our many member families who contacted their representatives. You have proved that homeschoolers are still willing to pay the price of liberty! Sincerely, Scott Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney {{JoinAd}} ====================================================================== The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
