====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== December 29, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Last year, Council member Kevin Chavous tried to force 3-year olds to go to school. This year, he wants to give tax breaks to public school teachers. Chavous has introduced a bill in the DC Council that would further subsidize public school educations. Bill 15-520, the "Teachers Tax Credit Amendment Act of 2003," [http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1247] would give teachers a property tax reduction on homes that they buy in the District. HSLDA is officially neutral on this bill, as it would not directly impact homeschoolers, except insofar as they pay taxes. The hearing on this bill will be held on January 7, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of The John Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave, N.W. We encourage citizens to become familiar with the legislative process in the District. This bill, relating to education and taxes, could be an excellent way to introduce your children to civics-or even brush up on your own knowledge. It's the involvement of homeschooling families in the political process that preserves the freedoms we currently enjoy. Thanks for training the next generation of political leaders! Sincerely, Scott Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney {{JoinAd}} ====================================================================== The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
