====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== November 6, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Appomattox County Public Schools is sending letters to homeschool families requiring the birth date and grade level of children in the family. The letter states that this information is needed in order to prepare a report required by the Virginia Department of Education. The information that a homeschool family is required to submit to county officials is clearly set forth in the homeschool statute. It does not include the birth date or grade level of the children. Whether the Virginia Department of Education requires the public school system to provide this information or not is moot since homeschool families have no duty to provide the information in the first place either to the school system or the Department of Education. We recommend that you disregard the letter. In order for the government to fulfill its legitimate function of protecting the rights of its citizens, we must understand when it is appropriate to 'just say no' to an unauthorized government request for information.
