====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== November 3, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Despite the many calls that have poured into her office, Assemblywoman Previte is being evasive about her plans to make scapegoats of homeschoolers by seeking restrictions on homeschooling. Her staff has been telling callers that she did not ask for a bill to be drafted restricting homeschooling. This conflicts with a report stating just the opposite in the Philadelphia Inquirer. To clarify this, I emailed her Thursday and asked if she is truly seeking legislation to create government "oversight" of homeschooled children. Her evasive reply Friday was that she was exploring "all directions." She said she wants to include homeschoolers in a "safety net" but did not describe its nature. She did not, as we had hoped, clearly state that she would not seek restrictions on homeschool families. This kind of evasive answer is unsatisfactory as citizens prepare to go to the polls to elect their representatives. Until she speaks plainly, we must assume her "safety net" is a nice-sounding word for restrictions on homeschoolers. Victor Cirilo, Chief of Staff for Assemblyman John McKeon, on the other hand, plainly stated in an email to me late Thursday that he does not intend to restrict homeschoolers. We are grateful to Assemblyman McKeon for his clear statement and are disappointed Assemblywoman Previte has not done the same. Action Requested Please call Assemblywoman Previte. She is not only accountable to the voters in her district, but to all the citizens of the state because she is a chairman of a legislative committee. Your courteous message to her can be as simple as: "Please answer clearly. Please publicly renounce any plans to punish innocent families for the government's failure. Homeschoolers refuse to be scapegoats for the reported criminal actions of Raymond and Vanessa Jackson and the gross negligence of government social workers." Her phone number is (856) 428-3343. Pass this on to others. No further calls to Assemblyman McKeon's office are recommended at this time. Thank you for standing with us to protect homeschool freedom. Sincerely Yours, Scott A.
