====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 29, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Homeschoolers have been vexed for several years by a man who calls, tries to gain the confidence of a family member, and then begins asking questions about the family's use of corporal punishment. He has not troubled homeschoolers for about a year, but now has resurfaced in Maine. His approach may be slightly different each time. In a recent episode, he first asked a family member about "church hours." He then said he was very strict with his children, used the rod, and was looking for like-minded people. He asked what their church believed about the rod. If this is truly the same man who has distressed homeschool families previously, he may also ask exactly how parents administer discipline to their children. Unless you have had this happen to you before, you may not be prepared for this. People who trustingly discuss private matters with him later report feeling shamed, humiliated and violated. We recommend you use appropriate caution when someone you do not know begins asking questions about family discipline. Consider giving suitable instructions to any children who may answer your telephone. Contact us immediately if this man calls you or anyone you know, and give us the date, time, and telephone number he called. HSLDA is committed to doing all we can to bring this to an end.
