====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 22, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: The information a family must include when filing a notice of intent is very simple and straightforward. Nonetheless, some counties persist in asking families for more information. A Roanoke County member family filed the proper notice. In accordance with our recommendations, the family did not include information that is not required under law but which Roanoke routinely asks for. Roanoke should have responded by filing the family's notice of intent and dropping the matter. Unfortunately, they did not. One of the employees of the school system actually took time away from other responsibilities, drove to the family's house, and personally asked them for the "missing" information. This is unacceptable. We urge our Roanoke area members to resist efforts by the school system to collect information to which they are not entitled under law. If an official comes to your door, do not be intimidated into submitting the unlawfully requested information. If families acquiesce to the demands of the school system it may grow bolder and pursue homeschool families further. HSLDA is in the process of contacting the school district to insist that they change their policy.
