|
---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- September 16, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Several counties ask families who operate under the portfolio review option to fill out a form, often called a "Home Schooling Profile", before submitting their portfolio. These forms ask for information to which the school system is not entitled. For example, a form recently mailed to Frederick County home schoolers asks for the birth date of the student and the basic home instruction schedule. Allegany County's form asks whether the family networks with other families, whether the student's work is evaluated by anyone else, and asks for a description of the student's "designated study area." You are not required to fill out any such form before submitting your portfolio. We recommend that you do not. However, if you want to fill out the form, we recommend that you put "N/A" in the blanks calling for information not required by regulations. The forms usually hint that your portfolio review will go faster if you fill out the form. The promise of saving time is certainly very appealing. It is difficult to understand, however, how gathering information that is not required--and not even relevant to the portfolio review--will speed up anything. Furthermore, the school systems do not seem to take into account how filling out such a form will interrupt your home school day. It takes time to fill out forms. Teaching parents are busy. And keep in mind that you can save time by simply dropping off your portfolio, rather than waiting with the official while he reviews your portfolio.
