---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- September 15, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: The significant flaws in the P-16 draft have been repaired. Your voices were heard! The new (September 16) draft makes it clear that a satisfactory score on Core 40 end of course assessments can replace placement tests (e.g., to determine basic Math and English proficiency), but not admissions tests. Instead of requiring the Core 40-- to the exclusion of all other curricula-- for admission and financial aid to public colleges, it allows admissions and financial aid based on the "documented equivalent" of Core 40 subjects. This allows homeschoolers to continue to use their preferred curriculum, provided it covers in an equivalent manner the subjects in the Core 40. This gives considerable flexibility. Most colleges already require students applying for admission to take certain subjects at the high school level. We anticipate that parents of students applying for college will be readily able to "document" the courses their graduating students have taken just as they have in the past. The plan recommends that this requirement begin for students now in the 6th grade, so parents have plenty of lead-time if they need to make any adjustments. P-16 is only a recommendation. It has yet to be adopted by any college. Based on these significant changes, we no longer recommend families attend the meeting tomorrow evening.
