|
---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- September 12, 2003 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Most members of the Education Roundtable have been silent concerning the flaws in P-16 that could threaten homeschool families. We faxed a letter with our concerns to every member of the Roundtable about a week ago, but we have heard only silence from the majority of them. It is vital that we let members of the Roundtable know that the flaws in P-16 must be repaired. Action Requested: 1. Attend the meeting of the Roundtable on Tuesday, September 16, at 1:30 P.M. in Ballrooms C and D of the Hyatt Regency in Indianapolis. Although it is likely that there will not be an opportunity for public comment, your presence will have an impact. 2. Comment about the need for repairing the flaws in P-16 at the agency's website, www.edroundtable.state.in.us/comments/public_comment.htm. Your message can be as simple as, "The flaws in P-16 must be repaired or the plan may jeopardize the opportunity for many students attending non-accredited, non-public schools to attend college or receive financial aid or scholarships. Keep a record of Roundtable member's votes." Background: For a list of all 6 flaws and how they can be repaired, go to www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1085 (requires Adobe Acrobat). On September 11th, I had a lengthy conversation with Kevin McDowell. He is the General Counsel for the Department of Education, and was speaking on behalf of Dr. Suellen Reed, the Superintendent of Public Instruction. I outlined the flaws in P-16 that threaten homeschool families. Mr. McDowell fully comprehended our concerns and said that Dr. Reed did not want P-16 to hurt homeschool families. Nonetheless, he would not support specific language to repair the flaws in P-16 at this time.
