---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear HSLDA Member or Friend: Under a new regulation adopted this summer, homeschool families are to annually verify whether they intend to continue homeschooling their children. Many counties have written forms for this, but they include a generous serving of "home cooking," such as asking for information to which they are not entitled, misleading families as to what the regulations require, and mischaracterizing the form as an "update." Action Recommended We recommend that you DO NOT use your school system's form for your annual verification. Send a letter instead. It can be as simple as, "Dear Mr. Smith: We intend to continue homeschooling our children, Andrew, Beth, and Sarah, this coming year." If you wish to use your school's form, we recommend that you write "N/A" in all spaces that call for information that is not required. Background In their annual verification, families are not required to provide any information except whether the children will continue to be homeschooled. The verification can be communicated in person, by phone, by letter or by email. No form is required. The verification is to be submitted to the superintendent (for families using the portfolio option) OR to the umbrella program (for families operating under the umbrella option). The first year a child is homeschooled, the family should file the "Home School Notification Form" prepared by the Department of Education (available on our web site). This is filed with the local superintendent. This has also been known as the "Assurance of Consent" form. It is not to be filed again. To protect freedom, we must insist that government agencies stay within the bounds of the law. Thank you for standing with us to protect freedom.
