---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- August 15, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Coventry Public Schools has sent out a form for homeschool families to sign that goes beyond proper boundaries. It asks for confidential information that you are not required to submit under law. It also asks the family to sign an "agreement" which could be interpreted as a contract under certain circumstances. This could cause adverse consequences. If you live in the Coventry area and receive this form, we advise you to disregard it. I will be in communication with Coventry Public Schools with the hope of guiding them back into operation within proper boundaries. In the meantime, I recommend that you submit a notice of intent to homeschool by using the form that is available on our website. Visit: http://members.hslda.org/state/RI/default.asp (You will need your HSLDA membership number to log into this part of our website). Submitting HSLDA's form will provide sufficient information for the school committee to recognize your homeschool program. In a day when identity theft is a rapidly growing crime and individual privacy is threatened by expanding government databases, it is important that we resist any effort by a government agency to obtain personal information to which it is not entitled. Contracts can have adverse consequences. No homeschool family should feel pressured to sign a contract in order to do what they already have a constitutional right to do.
