---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- July 1, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Due in no small part to your phone calls to members of the Hanover County School Board, the Board is now willing to reconsider its policy toward religious exemptions. This is a tremendous step forward! When I initially spoke to a Hanover representative on June 20 before your phone calls, there was no willingness to re-examine the regulations. After that initial "no," homeschoolers across Hanover County, including members of Home School Legal Defense Association, Home Educators Association of Virginia, and Virginia Home Educators Association, went to work and turned this "no" into a "yes!" In view of Hanover's change of heart, I recommend that our phone calls to Board members stop for the time being. You will be getting one, or possibly two letters from the Hanover County Public School System that address the situation. We will look at those carefully for evidence that the Board is sincerely willing to listen to homeschoolers and re-evaluate the regulations. Please continue to pray about the situation. We are grateful for this a partial victory, but we will press on for a full victory in which new, homeschool friendly policies are enacted. Sincerely yours, Scott A.
