---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- June 30, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Last week we informed you of a threat to Idaho homeschoolers. The Governor's Task Force was considering a proposal for mandatory registration, testing, and oversight of homeschoolers. Your response to the call for immediate email and faxes was overwhelming. Hundreds of letters flooded the Task Force, making quite an impact. Your message that homeschoolers do not need or want any more regulation was heard loud and clear. The Education Committee of the Task Force, after an hour of debate, declined to approve the Draft Recommendation which called for registration and testing of homeschoolers. This is the good news. However, every member of the committee still expressed concern for the "children whose parents are failing to actually teach their children at home." Although the immediate threat is over, a threat still exists. The Executive Director of the Idaho Education Association (IEA) successfully introduced a motion asking the Governor for greater study of whether there is a need for regulation of homeschooling. The IEA's motion passed with only two dissenting votes. The committee report is expected to be sent to the Governor in seven weeks. Barry and Res Peters of the Idaho Coalition of Home Educators were told that the Governor had been impressed with home educators and is generally supportive of homeschooling. However, had he been faced with the approval of his own appointed Task Force, it would have been almost impossible for him to ignore the recommendation for the testing and registration of homeschoolers. Barry Peters stated, "The cooperation between Idaho homeschooling groups and HSLDA, produced a surgical response to all of the right people at just the right moment." In the meantime, if you have not yet communicated to the Governor and Lt. Governor, we recommend you send a supportive email with this message (in your own words): "Homeschooling works without needless government oversight. Thank you for your support of parents' right to choose homeschooling. Please reject any recommendation to "study" the issue of homeschooling with the intent to increase regulations. Homeschooling has a proven track record of academic success and has earned the right to be left alone." Also, include a paragraph about the success of your homeschool and send the email sometime in the month of July. 1) Governor Dirk Kempthorne Email: governor@gov.state.id.us 2) Lt.
