---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ----------------------------------------------------------------------
June 16, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Time is running out for the New York Assembly to pass Assembly Bill 4598, the homeschool freedom bill. The last day scheduled for the current legislative session is this Thursday, June 19, 2003. Your calls are needed today and everyday until the session ends if this bill is to be passed this year.
Unfortunately, members of the Assembly are receiving some calls from those opposing this legislation. Assembly members must get the message that the overwhelming majority of home educators in New York do not want to continue with the oppressive, unnecessary state oversight in the current law.
Two key legislators in the Assembly determine whether this bill will even be called for a vote: Assemblyman Steven Sanders, Chairman of the Education Committee, and Assemblyman Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the Assembly.
They need to hear from you immediately!
REQUESTED ACTION (1) Please contact Steven Sanders, Chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, with this message:
"Please allow Assembly Bill 4598 to be voted on in the Education Committee this session. AB 4595 will relieve public school officials and ALL homeschooling parents from burdensome and costly administrative tasks. All home educators have earned the right to regulatory relief after demonstrating their success under the current law for the past 15 years."
Assemblyman Steven Sanders 518-455-5506 sanders@assembly.state.ny.us
(2) Immediately call Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the Assembly, with this message: "Please urge Chairman Sanders to allow AB 4598 to be voted on this session. Assembly Bill 4598 which will relieve public school officials and homeschooling parents from burdensome and costly administrative tasks. Home educators have earned the right to regulatory relief after demonstrating their success under the current law for the past 15 years."
Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the Assembly 518-455-3791 speaker@assembly.state.ny.us
(3) Immediately call Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, the sponsor of AB 4598, because he is not receiving calls supporting the homeschool freedom bill.
"Thank you for your support of the home school bill, AB 4598. Please do all you can to pass this bill this session. We need relief from the onerous regulations."
Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg 518-455-3028
Assembly Bill 4598 will eliminate over 75% of the regulations on homeschoolers. With God's help, we can pass this bill this year. We are on the home stretch, please call now!
