---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Texas Members and Friends, One of the most important parental rights is the right to discipline your child. In order to further secure this right in the state of Texas, we need you to call the Senate immediately. Senate staff have confirmed that parents have until May 23 to make our phone calls. House Bill 374 would specifically recognize the right of parents to use corporal discipline. This would prevent the routine practice of social workers to investigate parents who use reasonable corporal discipline. Your calls will likely make the difference whether this bill passes in the Senate and is enacted into law. REQUESTED ACTION There are two action items. You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler: 1) Call your senator and give him the following message in your own words. "Please vote for H.B. 374 which will help protect parents' rights in the training of their children." To get the name and telephone number of your senator, use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. If you do not have Internet access, you can call the legislature to find out information about your senator. 2) Please call as many members of the committee as possible and express your support of the bill. COMMITTEE ON JURISPRUDENCE: Chair, Senator Robert Duncan, 512-463-0128 Vice Chair, Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr., 512-463-0106 Senator Kip Averitt, 512-463-0122 Senator Teel Bivins, 512-463-0131 Senator Chris Harris, 512-463-0109 Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., 512-463-0127 Senator Royce West, 512-463-0123 You can also send an email to committee members by going to: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=803 Click on the committee member's name and select "Send email." BACKGROUND The Texas Family Code recognizes that parents have "the duty of care, control, protection, and reasonable discipline of the child." The Texas Administrative Code currently states that reasonable discipline does not fall within the classification of abuse or neglect. H.B. 374 specifically recognizes that corporal discipline administered by the parents is a form of reasonable discipline. You can view the text of the bill as well as its legislative history on our website at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=804. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Christopher J.
