---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- May 14, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Harlan County homeschoolers have weathered the worst of a recent assault on their liberties. Because homeschoolers stood firm, Harlan County has all but dropped its demand to inspect homeschool records. One family had agreed to meet with school officials due to serious health issues that were aggravated by the stress of school demands. However, after meeting with Don Woolett of the Christian Home Educators of Kentucky (CHEK), even that family chose to stand their ground for freedom. With help of Home School Legal Defense Association, they have been able to "just say 'No'" to an inspection of their records. As other Kentucky homeschoolers have heard of Harlan County's plight, other problems have surfaced. Meade County has tried to inspect every homeschooler's records for two years. While many HSLDA families in Meade County have refused to meet with school officials, other non- member families have felt they had no choice. With Harlan County's example of courageous unified action, Meade County homeschoolers may be ready to take a stand as well. Kentucky law makes it all too easy for school officials to intimidate isolated families. When homeschoolers join local support groups and statewide organizations like CHEK or the Kentucky Home Education Association, they gain the strength they need to preserve their liberty. Every family that joins HSLDA knows they can stand their ground against harassment by school officials, but many non-members feel the pressure to comply with school demands. We encourage every Kentucky homeschooler to stand firm for freedom. Harlan County homeschoolers have set a courageous example for homeschoolers throughout the Commonwealth. Very truly yours, Scott W.
