---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- May 2, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Harlan County homeschoolers met with Don Woolett, of the Christian Home Educators of Kentucky, to brace themselves for upcoming visits by local and state education officials. Meanwhile, the principal of one elementary school refused to recognize the withdrawal of a student from public school to begin homeschooling without "clearance from the central office." Principal Harold Madden, of Evarts Elementary School, warned the family that he would "have to count [the child] absent," even though the family had provided the notice required by law. Despite the demands by Harlan County officials, local homeschool families have rallied to the cause of freedom. One family agreed to meet with school officials because the stress and threats were aggravating one parent's medical condition, but the rest of the local homeschool community has been able to stand their ground. Homeschoolers remember Ben Franklin's words, "We must all hang together, or we shall most assuredly all hang separately."
