Dear Colorado Members and Friends,
Due to the efforts of Representative Kevin Lundberg and Senator Bruce Cairns, House Joint Resolution 03-1050 was passed in both the House and Senate officially recognizing Home Education Week in Colorado.(April 20-26). This is an exciting development that further demonstrates the significant impact of homeschooling in Colorado.

Here is the text of the resolution:
HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 03-1050 CONCERNING THE RECOGNITION OF HOME EDUCATION WEEK IN COLORADO.
WHEREAS, The state of Colorado is committed to excellence in education; and
WHEREAS, The state recognizes the importance of parental choices in pursuit of educational excellence and the significance of family involvement in education; and
WHEREAS, The state of Colorado recognizes the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children; and
WHEREAS, Home education is a part of our national heritage evidenced in the formative years of home-educated Americans such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Abigail Adams, Patrick Henry, John Jay, Booker T. Washington, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and Ansel Adams; and
WHEREAS, Home education is the fastest growing educational alternative in this country, and a growing number of parents in Colorado have chosen to teach their children at home; and
WHEREAS, Recent studies have found that, on average, home-educated students in grades 1 through 12 score between the 75th and 90th percentile on nationally standardized tests; and
WHEREAS, Home-educated students captured 3 of the top 6 positions in the last National Geography Bee, including 1st place; and
WHEREAS, Home-educated young men and women regularly serve as interns and aides in the Colorado House of Representatives and Senate; and
WHEREAS, Home-educating parents ought to be commended for the extraordinary sacrifice and commitment they bring to the education of their children; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate that Colorado home educators and home- educated children be recognized for their contribution to the diversity and quality of education in this great state; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer organizations such as Christian Home Educators of Colorado, Concerned Parents of Colorado, and hundreds of home- education support groups throughout the state provide a network of support, resources, and encouragement to thousands of home-educating families around the state; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-fourth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That the General Assembly honors, thanks, and celebrates home educators and the home-educated children of this state and recognizes April 20-26, 2003, as Home Education Week in Colorado.
Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Joint Resolution be sent to Christian Home Educators of Colorado and Concerned Parents of Colorado.
We are thankful to God for bringing home schoolers in Colorado this far. I remember only 15 years ago, homeschoolers were fighting for the right to simply exist in Colorado. God is good.
