---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 24, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, We are excited to announce another victory in Texas! We can now say that Senate Bill 586, the homeschool registration bill, is dead and no longer a threat homeschoolers. When Senator Barrientos introduced S.B. 586 in February, we contacted his office and were told the purpose of their bill was to prevent the problem of inaccurate statistics on public school dropouts. Senator Barrientos believed requiring homeschoolers to register with the Commissioner of Education would fix this problem. HSLDA refused to compromise on the issue and explained homeschoolers want to keep the freedom they have earned after years of major court battles. We asked Senator Barrientos to withdraw the bill but he refused. HSLDA sent out an alert urging homeschoolers to contact Senator Barrientos and express their opposition to the bill. Over the next few weeks, Senator Barrientos' office received thousands of calls and email from homeschoolers opposing the bill. In the meantime, we continued to communicate with the legislature to resolve this issue. Just this week HSLDA's Legislative Counsel Tom Sanders spoke with Sen. Barrientos' office where they told him that S.B. 586 is "essentially dead." The bill will remain on the committee agenda until the end of the legislative session, but no more action will be taken on it. Your faithfulness in communicating your opposition to S.B. 586 played a vital part in killing it. Thank you for your efforts! HSLDA will continue to monitor Texas legislation and will report on it through email and our website. Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel {{JoinAd}} ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
