Nevada--Homeschoolers Fix Two Dangerous Bills

----------------------------------------------------------------------
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

April 22, 2003

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Thank you for your help in keeping Nevada free. Your telephone calls,
email, and letters have made a significant difference on two bills
regarding child abuse and neglect.

Senate Bill 223 would have required pastors to report child abuse.
That bill was sent to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, which
decided not to act on it. As of April 12, SB 223 is effectively dead.

Senate Bill 383 would have required every employee or volunteer of an
"entity that provides organized activities for children" to report
child abuse. Many Nevada homeschoolers contacted the Senate Committee
on Human Resources and Facilities to oppose this. The Committee
received the message that volunteers should not be criminally
punished for failing to report child abuse. It amended the bill on
April 15 to eliminate the requirement that volunteers report abuse.
This is in direct response to your involvement!

Homeschoolers are only a tiny fraction of the population, but we are
a minority that is passionate about liberty. Citizens who participate
in our representative democracy get results.

Very truly yours,

Scott W. Somerville
