---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 15, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for your phone calls and efforts to attend the hearing for Assembly Bill 264. As a result of your hard work, homeschool liberties have been protected once more in Nevada! Assembly Bill 264, which would have required standardized testing for homeschoolers, has been amended. Section 49, the testing provision, was removed by a committee vote at the request of the sponsor! Frank Schnorbus, President of the Northern Nevada Homeschool Advisory Council, reports that many homeschoolers came forward at the hearing to testify against the offensive section of AB 264. The amendment to remove the homeschool testing provision was offered by AB 264's primary sponsor, Assemblywoman Christina Giunchigliani. The HSLDA legal staff had been working for the last few weeks with the sponsor to convince her to amend the homeschool testing provision by removing it entirely. Your calls helped her make up her mind. According to a policy analyst with the Assembly Education Committee, the committee voted 11-1 in favor of passing the bill as amended. Meanwhile, AB 311, a sports bill, moved forward at the same hearing. While HSLDA is neutral on bills that seek to gain public benefits for homeschoolers, it is gratifying to see a large majority of elected representatives voting in favor of a homeschool-friendly bill. Please visit our website for more information on these bills: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/NV/ I will be speaking to Nevada homeschoolers at the first annual Nevada Homeschool Network convention in Las Vegas on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at 3415 South Mojave Road, Las Vegas, Nevada. For information on this conference, go to: http://www.nevadahomeschoolnetwork.com/convention.html Come rally for freedom at one of these conventions and see what you can do to make Nevada one of the best homeschool states in the country! Very truly yours, Scott W.
