---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 31, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, For the first time in years, Kentucky homeschoolers have ended a legislative season without a desperate battle for freedom. Ever since Representative Barbara Colter lost her primary bid, homeschool leaders have been cautiously optimistic about the possibility for peace in the legislature. As the 2003 legislative season ends, that cautious optimism has proved well founded. Home School Legal Defense Association wants to thank Kentucky's hardworking homeschoolers and statewide organizations, CHEK and KHEA, for holding the line for freedom one year after another. All homeschoolers can celebrate the death of House Bill 32, which would have raised the compulsory attendance age to 18. It died without a fight in the House. HB 33, which was also an attempt to raise the compulsory attendance age, died with it. HB 58, which would have forced pastors to report confidential information regarding child abuse, never made it out of the Judiciary Committee. While none of these bills was a direct attempt to regulate home education, each one was important enough for HSLDA's attorneys and state leaders to monitor. It was not necessary to mobilize homeschoolers to oppose these bills because they did not advance through the legislative process. HSLDA encourages all Kentucky homeschoolers to join and support their local and state homeschool organizations. As Benjamin Franklin said so many years ago, "We must all hang together, or we shall most assuredly all hang separately." We thank God for this year's legislative season and are optimistic about next year. Very truly yours, Scott W.
