New York--Calls Urgently Needed on Homeschool Freedom Bill

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

March 21, 2003

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Your calls are working! The Senators offices are reporting that your
many calls on the homeschool freedom bill, Senate Bill 2060, are
having a positive impact.

Now we urgently need you to call the Assembly Education Committee to
voice your support for the identical version of the homeschool
freedom bill, Assembly Bill 4598. Your help is needed to prompt
committee members to pass this bill on to the full Assembly.

This bill would eliminate 75% of the present restrictions governing
home instruction programs since 1988. If this legislation is enacted,
parents would no longer be subject to the regulatory provisions of
the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

We are excited that AB 4598 was introduced by Harvey Weisenberg,
Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore, and Assemblyman Nancy Calhoun, Gary
Finch, Brian Kolb, Daniel O'Connell, and Bob Oaks. It also has 12
other co-sponsors in the Assembly.

Please contact the members of the Assembly Education Committee listed
below with this message:

"Please vote for Assembly Bill 4598 which will relieve public school
officials and homeschooling parents from burdensome and costly
administrative tasks. Home educators have earned the right to
regulatory relief after demonstrating their success under the current
law for the past 15 years."

By far, the most influential method of communicating with your state
legislators is by personal letter. Please take time to write to your
member of assembly about this important regulation. If you are unable
to write, a telephone call is the next most effective means of
lobbying your legislators.

Assembly Bill 4598 would make the following changes in the current

standardized testing) every year;

the person who administers a standardized achievement test or who
conducts the alternative method of evaluation;
