---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 19, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Virginia Governor Mark Warner has only until this Monday, March 24, to sign or veto House Bill 2404. If signed, this legislation would allow homeschool parents to teach the behind-the-wheel portion of driver education to their children. As of 3:00 PM on March 18, the Governor's policy office said that the decision of whether or not to veto the bill was still "under review." Some voices are urging the Governor to veto the bill. The Staunton News Leader published an editorial against the bill, and the Virginian Pilot published a letter to the editor urging him to veto it. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Call the Governor's office immediately and ask him to sign the bill. Call 804-786-2211 and select option 0, then ask to be transferred to a special assistant. The special assistant will ask for your name, phone number, and address. Your telephone number and address are optional. The assistant will ask which bill you are calling about, whether you want the Governor to sign it or veto it, and your reasons. Your reason for wanting the Governor to sign the bill may be as simple as, "House Bill 2404 will save the lives of young drivers. When a similar law was enacted in Colorado, deaths of young drivers dropped significantly." 2. Pass this alert on to others. BACKGROUND On February 20, the Virginia legislature overwhelmingly approved House Bill 2404, allowing homeschool parents with a good driving record to teach a behind-the-wheel program to their children. Teachers unions fought this bill vehemently.
