---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 14, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for your calls and email on Colorado House Bill 1310. Your efforts won the victory! Over 1,000 people contacted the committee, knocking the bill off the fast track. H.B. 1310 would have made the elusive concept of "mental abuse" a felony. After receiving so many calls, the sponsor of the bill, Representative Hefley, worked with us and concluded that the bill should die. The Judiciary Committee voted to kill the bill by a vote of 9 to 2, with Representative Hefley herself voting to kill the bill. Representative Hefley, who is also the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has indicated that she would like to work with HSLDA next year on bills that may affect homeschoolers' interests. Specifically, she has pledged to help HSLDA implement reforms to Colorado child welfare law.
