Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Thank you for making calls on Colorado House Bill 1310. Your efforts
were successful!
H.B. 1310 would have made a very broad definition of "mental abuse" a
felony. The bill, sponsored by the House Judiciary Committee
Chairwoman Lynn Hefley, was on a fast track. We sent out an alert on
March 5 urging Colorado members to call the House Judiciary Committee
to express opposition.
As we hoped, Representative Hefley contacted Home School Legal
Defense Association on Thursday morning before the hearing to ask for
help in revising the bill's language.
She stated, "The committee must have received 1,000 calls!" Another
legislator said the committee had so many calls they "experienced a
meltdown."
I was able to speak with Representative Hefley and express our
concerns. As a result, she had the Judiciary Committee table the
bill until next Thursday in order to work with us to rewrite the bill
to more narrowly define mental abuse. She explained that she wants
the bill to be acceptable to homeschoolers and not be used to harm
innocent families.
Thank you for your part in protecting the freedoms of Colorado
