---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- February 13, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, HSLDA congratulates the vigilant homeschoolers of Wyoming, who are three for three in their defense of liberty! On Friday, February 7, the Wyoming House voted to defeat House Bill 201, which would have made kindergarten compulsory. Although homeschoolers are a tiny fraction of Wyoming's total population, they have proven that they can make their voices heard in the legislature All three of Senator Kathryn Sessions' bills died during this legislative session. Senate File 110, which was a direct assault on homeschool liberties, was never brought up for a vote. We thank Senator Hank Coe, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, for refusing to consider a bill that directly conflicted with federal law. Senate File 109, which would have raised the penalties for truancy from 25 dollars to 1,000 dollars, was defeated in the Senate Education Committee by a vote of four to one. House Bill 201 passed the House Education Committee with some dissenting votes, but was killed on the House floor. Senator Sessions has announced her intention to hold an "interim study" to discuss her concerns about home education. Thus the immediate threat has passed, but a the long-term danger remains. HSLDA encourages all Wyoming homeschoolers to work together to preserve homeschool freedom. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Join your local homeschool support group and state organization. If you are not a member of Homeschoolers of Wyoming, visit their website at www.homeschoolersofwy.org to find out more about this organization. 2. If your local support group would like to be listed on HSLDA's support group page, please contact us with the name of the support group, the name and telephone number of a contact person, and the principal county your support group serves. By listing support groups on our page, we can make it easier for Wyoming homeschoolers to work together. 3. Please send a thank-you letter or postcard to Senator Hank Coe and your legislator if he or she voted favorably on these bills. Very truly yours, Scott W.
