Montana--Please Attend Hearing on Senate Bill 276

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

January 31, 2003

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

HSLDA has been informed that the Montana Senate Education Committee
is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 276 on Monday, February 10, 2003, at
3:00 p.m. in Room 317C at the Capitol in Helena.

As mentioned in the message I sent out yesterday, S.B. 276 would
require homeschool students to take state tests adopted by the
Montana Board of Public Education. It is crucial in protecting your
academic freedoms that your family attend this hearing to show the
Committee members that home educators oppose this bill. I will be
there to testify on behalf of our member families in Montana.

1. Please attend the hearing of the Senate Education Committee on
Monday, February 10, to demonstrate your opposition to Senate Bill
276. Contact other homeschooling families who are not members of
HSLDA and urge them to attend this hearing as well. State lawmakers
must see that homeschoolers are willing to fight for their freedoms.

2. Please contact the members of the Senate Education Committee
listed below and your own state representative with this message:

"Please vote against Senate Bill 276 which violates the right of
parents to choose the curriculum they consider best for their own
children. The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 specifically
prohibits states from mandating that homeschool students take state
assessments. Enactment of this bill will jeopardize all federal
funding for education in Montana."

A letter is the most effective means of influencing legislators. If
you choose not to write, please call and email the state senators.
They need to hear from every homeschooling family in Montana.
